Folacin

Women are recommended to increase their intake of folic acid during the first three months of pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Folacin or Folic Acid works with B12 in a number of body processes as important to cellular division because it is necessary in DNA synthesis. Folic acid is needed to ensure that cells divide correctly. Cooking and poor storage can destroy up to half of the folic acid in food and it has to be replenished daily. Folic Acid and B12 also work to reduce the body’s concentrations of homocysteine. Higher than normal homocysteine levels have been implicated in conditions such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Some research shows that reducing homocysteine can also benefit those suffering from depression.
