Lutein is a carotenoid; it is the yellow pigment found in egg yolk and many plants. In the body, it is present in the light-sensitive cells in the central part of the retina, known as the macular. Here, in the region of maximum visual sensitivity, it helps maintain healthy vision. As an antioxidant, it harnesses free radicals which damage cells and neutralises them. Apart from eggs, lutein, like other carotenoids is found in yellow fruits and vegetables, but also highly concentrated in raw leafy green vegetables.
