Probiotics and Digestion

Prebiotics and probiotics improve the viability of good bacteria in the gut. The gut, or small and large intestines contain millions of bacteria which aid the digestive process. These bacteria are compromised when antibiotics are taken, or there are digestive problems. Prebiotics are carbohydrates that pass through the stomach intact, into the gut where they provide nutrients for probiotics to feed on and multiply.  Prebiotics include inulin and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS). Probiotics are also known as good bacteria. Depending on the bacteria needs of the gut, probiotic ‘strains’ have different functions. Probably the most common are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidus which help maintain a good colonisation of bacteria.
